Legendary highlife musician, Amakye Dede has revealed that it was never his will to crown Kuami Eugene as the “New King of Highlife.”
Speaking in an interview on Asaase Radio, the “serious man” indicated that he was forced to do the crowning on stage at the 2019 edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
According to him, “Though I did that, it was not my will to do so. They forced me to crown Kuami Eugene.”
“I even gave the crown they handed over to me to someone to put it down, but they later said, no I have to crown him, and I did it,” he added.

During the event, they both thrilled patrons to an breathtaking performance at the VGMAs stage. And in the middle of the performance, Amakye Dede paused to say that he thought high-life music was dead. But, Kuami Eugene has restored hope in him.
He went ahead to put a crown on Kuami Eugene’s head and blessed him to continue keeping the genre alive.
At the time, entertainment enthusiast and pundits questioned the veteran about his motive for what he did on stage. Finally from the horses own mouth, the cat has been let out of the bag.
